There’s a new artificial intelligence superstar in the graphic design space and it’s creating quite the disturbance from some people saying the era of graphic designers is over.
What are Dall-E and Dall-E 2?
On January 5, 2021, OpenAI released DALL-E. The name Dall-E is inspired by the combination of the famous Pixar movie Wall-E and the Spanish surrealist Salvador Dali. Both DALL-E and DALL E-2 are machine learning software models developed by a San Francisco based startup called OpenAI. The purpose of these models is to generate images in response to a specific written text.
DALL-E 2 was announced in April and became available for a select group of users earlier this year. It works because it has learned how descriptive text relates to images. The system uses a process called diffusion where it creates a pattern of random dots, then gradually changes it toward an image when it recognizes specific aspects of that image.
Where can Dall-E be used?
Dall-E is a multifunctional and powerful new software that easily solves any type of work in graphic design. It can be used for making music videos, create magazine covers, website animations, for the presentation of new ideas, it can bring new life to anything. It is an innovative tool for illustrators and art directors! It has the ability to generate 2D images and generates also reflect the complexity of a 3D scene. To a certain extent, it has time perception, geometric, textures and patterns understanding. Once DALL-E 2 has created an image from a text prompt, you can edit the results, change the location of objects, add or remove elements, and adjust shadows, reflections, colors, textures, and much more.
What are the effects it will have on graphic designers?
DALL-E has been going through a beta test only where a few selected people have been granted access to try it out and experience what it can actually create, and as far as the results go it’s pretty impressing actually. We can’t teach an algorithm to know how to target a specific group of people in terms of psychological responses with its design not yet anyway, machines cannot understand the subtle nuances of human beings and how we think and feel in regard to marketing and graphic design at least not efficiently.
If you’re looking for a fun platform that combines creativity and machine learning, DALL-E is just that. That said, it’s only useful if you’re familiar with the concepts of color theory and design in general; it’s not capable of producing something completely original. Still, if you are a trained graphic designer or artist, it can create some surprisingly decent images and offer a lot of creative freedom in the process.
